‘A Night to Remember’ – restored and re-released for the Titanic Centenary
The 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic will be marked by the re-release of a fully restored version of the 1958 black and white classic ‘A Night To Remember’ in which the final hours of the ship’s fateful voyage on April 14th 1912 are recounted.
The Deluxe team is delighted to have been involved with the restoration of this classic film from beginning to end and have been working tirelessly behind the scenes in partnership with ITV Studios Global Entertainment to ensure its completion ahead of the centenary this year.
Our team was fortunate to be able to work from the original 35mm camera negatives, which were beautifully exposed by award winning cinematographer Geoffrey Unsworth, and which provided the optimum starting point for the restoration process.
The film was scanned on a pin registered Arriscan at 2K to DPX files before being ingested into Da Vinci Resolve for colour grading. Digital clean up tools MTI, Phoenix and Diamant were used to remove light dust, provide stabilization and repair physical tears that were visible in the frame.
The restoration was not without its challenges though; dancing highlights on water made automated restoration of these sections of film impossible owing to the risk of them being identified as dust and subsequently removed whilst the use of automated stabilization tools would prove problematic on any sections of film featuring lifeboats as they are designed to try and correct the natural rolling motion of the vessels. Furthermore the film needed to be put back to its original length; censors had removed a scene involving a dead baby from the original release which needed to be reinserted.
The results of the painstaking restoration process are a joy to see; the restored film premiered in Cannes at last year’s Festival and it promises to be appreciated by an equally receptive audience in coming weeks.
‘A Night to Remember’ is available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray from Monday March 19th with the theatrical re-release scheduled in the UK on Friday 13th April as part of the centenary celebrations.
